Annual Report on Heart, Eye surgery and Thalassemia Project

April 16, 2013

Fear of "knowing the truth" keeps many people from getting the treatment they need. They ignore symptoms out of ignorance, embarrassment or fear.

Many or almost all patients who come to us are children from economically strained families. Poverty makes the parents of these children believe that "ignorance is bliss" till one day they wake up to a very cruel reality. The doctor explains that the child is sick because He or She needs immediate hospitalization for cardiac care. The anxiety is now even more than usual since this includes a lot of monetary involvement.

This is where SICW steps in. We council the parents and give them confidence to hope for the best. Monetary support from various sponsors is arranged. Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Narayana Hrudayalaya are the two hospitals we encourage for Heart treatment. These two organizations give very large concessions for surgeries to the underprivileged children of our society. The success rate in these hospitals is very high and very good  care  is taken of all the patients.

Eye surgeries is also one of the major medical projects taken up by SICW. Very small children hurt their eyes while playing in school or even at home. We have helped many such cases in the Rotary Narayana Nethralaya Hospital recover their sight. Proper advice on Eye care is very important and schools must also emphasize on this subject.

Thalassemia Project was started many years back and sponsored by Bhagirath Jan Kalyan Kosh even to this date. Monetary help is given to children, now most of them adults, for Blood transfusions. Deseferal injections and Decirox capsules is given to the children and these are sponsored by a family in Luxembourg.

To add to all this,we were visited by a group of ladies from Children's Hope India (an NGO in USA) and they have decided to help educate children suffering from Thalassemia and Cardiac problems by sponsoring education. This will bring relief to a lot of parents who will now be able to send their children to school.
