HIV or Human immunodeficiency virus is a virus that spreads through certain body fluids like infected blood, semen and vaginal fluids that attack the body's immune system. Over time, HIV can destroy the immunity system that the body can't fight off infections and disease. This leads to AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.
The reason for organising this awareness programme was because CHP team works in the field area where the population are mainly migrants and work as casual labourers or regular salaried. As this population migrate from different parts of the state and other states for job opportunities they are away from home and families so are vulnerable to temptations to satisfy their physical needs. Due to lack of knowledge of the infections spreads through unprotected sex the people are targets of HIV/AIDS, STI, etc.
So CHP team during home surveys interviewed the people about their knowledge and attitude towards HIV/AIDS. Out of 195 home surveys from 2018-2019, 115 families had no idea or wrong idea towards HIV/AIDS. So the CHP team organized a HIV/AIDS campaign in collaboration with WBSAPCS (West Bengal State AIDS Prevention & Control Society) whose theme this year was “GETTING TO ZERO”.
It was a three day campaign.
On 2/12/2019 the CHP team tied 56 Red ribbons on all the staffs of Jan Seva Organization and distributed leaflets and posters to them.
On 3/12/2019 CHP team organized a small session with the helpers of the Organization and explained about HIV/AIDS transmission by playing a game with them.
On 4/12/2019 CHP team distributed leaflets, posters, condoms and red ribbons to 55 people in Ward NO. 107 and 108. These people were interviewed about their knowledge on HIV/AIDS and out of 55 people 27 people had no knowledge about HIV/AIDS, 8 people had less knowledge and 14 participants had knowledge about HIV/AIDS, 6 participants never heard of it. It was found that 111 participants need more knowledge and awareness on HIV/AIDS.
At the end of the campaign the people of the Ward No. 108 and the helpers of Jan Seva agreed on having more awareness camps on HIV/AIDS to educate and arm themselves in a proper manner to safeguard them from this deadly disease.
