Family Planning Awareness Initiative

The CHP team along with Dr. Hartnett went to visit the slum area of Rajdanga Main Road to talk about the topic regarding family planning. We collected many women of that area with whom we had the conversation regarding the topic.

  • Family planning reinforces people’s right to determine the number and spacing of their children.

  • Family planning/ contraception reduce unwanted pregnancies leading to abortion.

  • Using condoms help prevent transmission of sexually transmitted disease.

  • Decreases the physical and mental exhaustion resulting from having a large family.

  • Women would have more time for education, vocational development, income production, recreation and care of existing children.

We also discussed about the five main types of family planning methods with the participants:

  1. Barrier methods

  2. Hormonal methods

  3. Intra uterine devices

  4. Natural methods

  5. Permanent methods

  6. Terminal methods

  • Female Sterilization - Laparoscopic ligation

  • Male Sterilization - Vasectomy

To make it more interesting, Dr. Hartnett and the team started with a game and distributed candies according to the members in each of the family.

The main objective of the game was “increase in the family size will also increase the expense in the family”. If we focus on the size of the family then the socio-economic status will be controlled.

Most of the participants were aware of the methods. But they were also eager to know more about methods. They had many queries regarding the different contraceptive methods. The team helped them to solve their queries.

A brief demonstration was also given to them about using condoms.

We were able to convince them that use of condom was not only as a contraceptive method but also to prevent different types of infection and also sexually transmitted diseases

At the end of the session we distributed condoms and some medicines (MULTIVITAMINS, FERSOLATE AND B COMPLEX) and some pain killers. Many of them wanted to come to the Jan Seva clinic for check up. On the whole we had a successful session.
