Out reach Programme on Hypertension

Hypertension is one of the most leading health problems in the world. It is mostly seen among the middle aged to old aged. According to the Cardiological Society of India research report 1 out of 5 adults has high Blood pressure, that equates to 80 million people in India.This health concern is mainly triggered by unhealthy lifestyle, like unhealthy diet, lack of sleep, excessive stress, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy habits like smoking, chewing tobacco, drinking alcohol. These mainly lead to High blood pressure or Hypertension.

The CHP team during their Home visit surveys and from mother and child clinic have discovered a huge number of hypertension patients. For this the team organized a hypertension awareness programme in Ward No. 107.

The CHP team along with Dr. Hartnett at first took interviews of the participants present there to know about their daily lifestyle. The team then discussed about Hypertension and related topics like its causes, treatment and preventions. The CHP team also showed a healthy lifestyle routine to the participants which will improve their health. At the end of the session the CHP team had their free blood pressure check up camp. Out of 16 participants, 7 participants had high blood pressure, 8 participants had low blood pressure and only 1 participant had normal blood pressure.

The interview data and blood pressure measurement was cross-checked and it was found that-

Reasons for high blood pressure

  • Excessive table salt consumption

  • Lack of sleep

  • Excessive stress

  • Lack of physical activity

  • Excessive smoking

Reasons for low blood pressure

  • Lack of proper diet

  • Dehydration

  • Lack of nutrients in food

  • Improper meal timing

The CHP team advised the participants who had high blood pressure to get daily check up and proper medications from the Mother and Child Clinic in Jan Seva.

Based on the discussion of Hypertension, a short term evaluation was done where it was found that 93% were knowledgeable regarding hypertension.
