From a Remote Village to the Frontlines of Care: The Inspiring Journey of Ayan Karmakar

Ayan Karmakar, a 25-year-old nursing professional, has carved a remarkable path through determination, hard work, and a deep commitment to patient care. Hailing from a remote village and belonging to a modest family of four, Ayan’s journey stands as a testament to perseverance and purpose.

He successfully completed his GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) course from Ashoknagar Nursing Training School of Howrah District Hospital, graduating with commendable results. During his academic journey, he built a strong foundation across key nursing disciplines, including Medical Surgical Nursing, Nutrition, Paediatric Nursing, Obstetrical and Gynaecological Nursing, Pharmacology, Fundamentals of Nursing, Nursing Education, Research, Management, and Mental Health & Psychiatric Nursing.

Ayan began his professional career as a Staff Nurse at B.C. Roy TB Hospital, Kolkata, on 16th March 2026, where he currently serves in the Neurology ward. His role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities across patient care, specialized medical tasks, and ward administration.

In his patient care duties, Ayan works closely with the ward sister to assess patient needs and develop individualized care plans. He provides essential bedside care, including maintaining hygiene, assisting with nutrition, repositioning patients, and ensuring their comfort and safety. His meticulous approach includes thorough bed-to-bed patient checks and smooth handovers between shifts.

Ayan is also actively involved in specialized areas of the hospital. In the operation theatre, he assists surgeons, monitors patients, and ensures proper handling of instruments and sterilization procedures. In the labour room, he monitors labour progress, assists in deliveries, and provides newborn care. His experience in ICU and emergency care includes managing life-support equipment, preparing crash trolleys, and delivering critical care with precision.

Beyond clinical duties, Ayan plays a vital role in ward administration. He ensures cleanliness, manages supplies and inventories, supervises support staff, and contributes to maintaining a safe and organized environment. He also participates in medical rounds, in-service training, and adheres strictly to hospital protocols.

Prior to his current role, Ayan gained extensive hands-on experience through clinical postings in four government hospitals—NRS Medical College & Hospital, Barasat MCH, Habra SGH, and Ashoknagar SGH. Over three years, he worked across multiple departments, including Operation Theatre (OT), ICU, SNCU, PICU, NICU, General Medicine, General Surgery, Paediatrics, and Emergency.
