The Adult Literacy Program which is being done in Jan Seva is a program for the ladies, to educate them on Financial Literacy and General Knowledge of Adulthood
The Adult Literacy Program at Jan Seva is a thoughtfully designed initiative for women, aimed at empowering them through financial literacy and essential knowledge required in adult life. This program primarily serves ladies who are school dropouts or those who never had the opportunity to pursue formal education during their childhood. By enrolling in this course, these women take a courageous step toward self-reliance, confidence, and informed decision-making.
The curriculum is comprehensive and deeply relevant to everyday life. It covers vital topics such as child immunisation, different marriage acts in India, usage of government documents for various purposes, gender policy, traffic and road safety rules, menstrual hygiene, and cleanliness and personal hygiene. Alongside these, a strong and detailed focus is placed on financial literacy, helping the participants understand savings, budgeting, and basic financial planning—skills that directly impact their families and futures.
A unique and much-loved component of the Adult Literacy Program is the six mandatory educational exposure visits. Once every month, all students travel together to museums, temples, or culturally significant destinations. These visits are designed not only to enhance learning but also to provide a refreshing and rejuvenating experience. For many of these women, it was the first time in their lives they had visited such places purely for learning and enjoyment.
Initially, some families were hesitant to allow the women to travel, as many of them had never stepped out for personal enrichment before. However, once their guardians understood that these were safe, well-organized, all-ladies trips and an integral part of the curriculum, they readily gave their consent. The enthusiasm shown by the participants was overwhelming, and their confidence grew with every journey.
During these visits, the women dressed in traditional Indian attire—mostly salwar suits—and some even brought their young children along, as they had no one at home to care for them. Destinations such as Kumartulli and Durga Mandir left a deep impression, where the students observed firsthand how potters struggled to dry idols during the heavy monsoon season. Visits to museums broadened their understanding of history and culture, while the Railway Museum offered fascinating insights into the evolution of Indian Railways, including the transition from coal-powered engines to diesel and electric locomotives.
The exposure visits included:
Birla Technology Museum
Metropolis Durga Mandir / Birla Temple
Kumartulli
Jorasanko Thakur Bari
Indian Museum
Railway Museum
Among all adult-focused initiatives at Jan Seva, the Exposure Visit Program has emerged as one of the most successful and cherished activities. It not only enhanced learning but also fostered joy, curiosity, and a sense of independence among the participants.
At the end of the course, a mandatory examination was conducted in November 2025, which all students appeared for with great sincerity and determination. This batch will be awarded their certificates in December 2025, duly signed by the Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Shirin Dastur, marking a proud milestone in their educational journey.
The Adult Literacy Program at Jan Seva stands as a powerful example of how education, exposure, and encouragement can transform lives—one woman at a time.
